UPCOMING CLASSES: Illuminated Letters and Lover’s Eye Token

January 20: Noir Magic — Lettering, Flora and Fauna with theresa mARTin

Noir Magic: Lettering, Flora and Fauna with theresa mARTin

Saturday, January 20, 2018
Alexandria, VA
10:00 – 2:30 pm, ½ hour lunch break

All Supplies Provided! Back in the days when monks transcribed books by hand, Illuminated letters were the enlarged first letter in a page or paragraph, often enhanced with decorative elements, flora, fauna and or mythological creatures. In this popular class, learn a variety of markmaking techniques to create a modern take on these classic papers. The metallic and color pens against the black paper produce a WOW effect from even the simplest designs. Theresa will guide your through her process and provide a large variety of lettering examples from books to be inspired by (and trace if desired). This is a meditative and fun process requiring no drawing experience  — anyone can doodle a repetitive design! You will leave class with hand made designs perfect to frame, use in book arts or as a greeting card, and more. $48 workshop fee and $20 materials fee, which includes a pack of 10 gel pens plus a white and a gold gel Uniball metallic pen (yours to keep after class!) and the following for use while in class: gold ink, black paper, metallic pencils, woodless pencils, metallic paints, stencils, punches and more.

Price: $68.00

February 10: Mixed Media Eye Token with theresa mARTin

Price: $70.00

Mixed Media Eye Token Workshop with theresa mARTin
Saturday, February 10, 2017
Alexandria, VA
10:00 am – 2:30 pm, ½ hour lunch break

All Supplies Provided! In the 18th and 19th century, Lover’s Eye Tokens were popular with the wealthy. A miniaturist painted just the eyes of a lover, preserving anonymity… thus the recipient alone knew the identity of the person depicted. The tokens were often elaborately decorated and worn as bracelets, brooches or pendants. Create your own version using a love token form, beads, pearls, rhinestones, and an eye portrait. Class fee, $45.00 + supply/kit fee of $25.00, which includes all necessary supplies; students will have a choice of materials and colors.
* Sizes of the tokens range between 2″ x 2-1/8″ to 3″ x 2″

Note: Although supplies are provided, feel free to bring in assorted beads, charms and embellishments from your stash to supplement or to add an even more personal touch. It’s satisfying to complete a stack of ATC’s (Artist Trading Cards). I’m looking forward to the ones I will get in return. This is for the JAMs meeting, Sunday, October 15th at Artistic Artifacts at 1:00pm. If you’re in the area, come join us.

Indigo Dye Day

Results of the Indigo Dye Day with Judy Gula of Artistic Artifacts.

I am happy to have made the last of three indigo dye days Judy held this summer. The photos show the results I got using tea bag papers, which are ethereal yet sturdy enough to take the dye and go through the washing machine to rinse. The next dye day will be in 2018 when the weather warms up and I believe I will go again.  Can’t wait!  Thanks Judy.

Student work from Illuminated Manuscript Letter Class

My students excel beyond anything I can teach them. I give them some pens and black paper and try to give a way to start out slowly. Then they jump into the deep end on their own with joy and create beautiful work.  It always astounds me.

I need to come up with a different name for the class in the future because it’s never strictly Illuminated Letters.  Any ideas for a new class name welcomed.

Showing here many process shots and having the hope that my students will send me photos when they finish at home.

Beowolf

Thanks to Artistic Artifacts for the wonderful art community.
